What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific, problem-solving approach designed to produce socially-significant outcomes. In other words, Behavior Analysts aim to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities using the science of behavior. With a focus on positive reinforcement and motivation, behavior analysis has become the leading therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as it teaches children functional behaviors to help them become happy and more independent individuals. The application of ABA is not limited to individuals with Autism, however, over 60 years of research supports its effectiveness in meeting the complex needs of this population.

Achieve Beyond’s ABA Programs Include:
  • A NYC team consisting of Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and highly trained Behavior Therapist (BT) or Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)
  • Verbal Behavior approach to increase language
  • Comprehensive Assessment with individualized goals focusing on increasing a child’s independence and happiness
  • Parent Training/Team meetings to encourage generalizations
  • Errorless teaching procedures to minimize frustration
  • Naturalistic teaching in a fun environment in order to capture a child’s motivation and keep them interested
  • Functional Behavior Assessment to determine why problem behaviors occur to determine the best strategies to teach
  • Functional Communication Training to replace problem behaviors with appropriate behavior
  • Social skills focused teaching plans and groups
  • Individualized, data-driven treatment plans are constantly and consistently updated based on the child’s progress
  • Quality Assurance mechanisms in place

Early Intervention
If there are only concerns about speech, why does a child need an evaluation of cognitive abilities?

Delays in one area may have an impact on other developmental areas. In order to ensure that the child is achieving their milestones, a developmental evaluation may be completed or psychological evaluation as deemed appropriate.

What if my child has already received an evaluation in the past?

If your child has received any evaluation in the past year and you have continued concerns on your child’s development. You may contact Achieve Beyond and our skillfully trained professionals in the field will guide you in the next steps of the process.

Will my child be “classified” or “labeled”?

There is no classification or labeling in the Early Intervention Program. However, EI follows the eligibility criteria set forth by the New York State Early Intervention Program.

What happens when a child turns three years old?

For children receiving Early Intervention services, a transition discussion to CPSE and/or other programs will take place with the Service Coordinator at the IFSP closest to their 2nd birthday.

CPSE

CPSE

What is CPSE?

CPSE stands for Committee on Preschool Special Education. These are services for children ages 3-5 who need any service on the special education continuum.

How do I refer my child to Achieve Beyond?

Call us directly at (718) 762-7633 for guidance and information.

Who can refer my child for CPSE services?

You or a qualified professional can refer your child to your local school district. That will start an evaluation process for your child. You will have to complete paperwork with your local school district that allows your child to be evaluated. There are timelines that both you and the school district must follow in order to complete this process.

How will I know what services my child will receive in CPSE?

The services that your child will be eligible to receive will be determined by the Committee at the initial eligibility meeting. This decision will be based on the evaluations and reports presented during the meeting. The committee will include you and anyone you want to bring as well as individuals that will represent the school district and the evaluation representative.

Do you have a school?

Achieve Beyond does not have a school.

**EI services are for children under 3 years of age with suspected or established developmental delays or disabilities. The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program funded by New York State. All children must be referred to the municipality to access services and the telephone number of the municipality must be included to facilitate a referral. Achieve Beyond’s programs are approved and funded by the New York State Department of Health. Services are provided at no out-of-pocket cost to parents, although health insurance will be accessed for reimbursement. Eligibility is determined by state-approved evaluators under contract with NYC, Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess and Orange counties. If the child is found eligible, services are identified in collaboration with the parent and must be authorized by the municipality. The municipality will arrange for service providers to deliver authorized services. When EI services are delivered in child care settings or community locations that require a fee, the parent is responsible for paying any costs associated with the child care or community location. Call 311 or (518) 473-7016 for more information.
