Treating a Sensory-Sensitive Child: What is in your Toolbox? Hands-on Home-Based Activities

This workshop will provide the early intervention specialist with simple and effective techniques to
incorporate into a daily routine to improve self-regulation and increase overall participation. The
participants should come prepared with a challenging case to discuss in order to acquire treatment
techniques, through hands-on activities and interactive discussion, to immediately apply during
home-based treatment.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Participants will be able to identify and apply specific appropriate treatment strategies to treat
    sensory processing disorder
  • Participants will be able to increase problem-solving and learn various inexpensive and user-friendly
    ideas to build up your therapy toolbox
  • Participants will be able to create and practice interventions through role-play and feedback


Sandra M. Duarte MS, OTR/L ,RYT-200 has worked at Achieve Beyond since 2008 when she was an OTA
during her first five years of practice. In 2012, she completed a 9-month Leadership Education in
Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program at the Westchester Institute for Human
Development in Valhalla, NY, which prepared her to assume leadership roles and deliver increased level of
care to the families and children with whom she works. In 2013, Sandra obtained a MS in Occupational
Therapy at Mercy College and has been working as a school-based occupational therapist with the NYC
Department of Education (DOE). In 2014, she became a 200-hour registered yoga teacher and has been
incorporating yoga as an adjunct treatment in both home care and school settings. Sandra currently
supervises and mentors occupational therapy assistants at Achieve Beyond. She has participated in volunteer
work with Medical Mission Ecuador since 2012 and has conducted presentations in NYC and Ambato, Ecuador.

  • Completion of a quiz after the course will be required to earn continuing education credit.
